Stainless Steel Drinking Straws: A Healthier Alternative to Plastic Straws

Did you know that more than 500 million plastic drinking straws are used in the US alone on a daily basis? That’s equivalent to more than 46,000 school buses filled with plastic straws annually. That’s a lot of plastic and all of it ends up in landfill sites. What's equally alarming is that a plastic straw takes about 700 years to decompose!

Plastic isn’t just unhealthy for the environment. It is unhealthy for us too. Research done in the past has revealed that when plastic comes in contact with food (especially hot food), it leaves certain chemicals in the food which can cause cancer, brain tumor, and impotency. Thus, if the restaurant serves you a piping hot chocolate drink with a plastic straw in it, you are potentially exposing yourself to life threatening diseases.

However, there is a healthy alternative to plastic drinking straws, and that’s stainless steel drinking straws. Unlike plastic, stainless steel drinking straws, just like any other utensil or cutlery in your home, can be reused as many times as you want. Thus, these straws are healthy for the environment.

Again, unlike plastics, when stainless steel drinking straws come in contact with food particles, no harmful chemicals are released in the food. Thus, they are a better alternative for sipping on that smoothie or pinnacolada.

There’s another upside to stainless steel plastic straws and that’s their aesthetic value. Just picture the two - a plastic drinking straw floating in your drink and a stainless steel drinking straw standing up elegantly in your beverage. Which sounds more appealing? Of course, the latter, unless of course you have drastically different tastes.

Stainless steel drinking straws are cool, health-wise, environment-wise as well as fashion-wise. That’s a lot of cool reasons to switch from plastic to steel drinking straws.
